Smarter than your doctor…

February 28th, 2010

Just because a person has an “M.D.” behind their name does not necessarily guarantee that they know everything there is to know about their profession. A wise person knows what he/she doesn’t know. And, an even wiser person recognizes that there are things about which he/she doesn’t know that they don’t know.

Therefore, when a patient consults with a doctor and the doctor quickly dismisses the long chronic health history in order to shorten the appointment, and prefers to focus only on the issue that prompted the appointment, the patient needs to walk away and find another doctor.

In Hiya’s search for Dr. Right, she has come to realize that very few doctors can understand her complex case, nor want to take the time to properly evaluate it, and most of them do not make the logical connections between episodes in her health history and her current symptoms. These are not research doctors. They are system doctors – told to see as many patients as possible in a six hour shift. For every symptom, there must either be a drug that can be prescribed or a treatment referral that can be made.

Is this a symptom of a bigger problem? Could it be that since Hiya is a Medicare patient the only doctors available to her are the young, lesser experienced ones? Many doctors, once they’ve established their practice stop accepting new insurance patients. It’s just not cost effective. The young doctors, while eager to build their own practice and please the patients they get to see, simply do not have the knowledge to deal with complex cases.

In most of her consultations, Hiya finds herself instructing the doctor on medical issues associated with her issues and sometimes inspiring them with her ability to survive without chemo, radiation, and surgery. In all visits so far, she leaves with few answers short of “standard of care” types of responses, and little to no new information that will help her find Dr. Right.

Hiya and Physical Therapy

February 7th, 2010

Hiya is being pushed and rushed by Dr. Primary and his boss. Today, she forced herself to go to physical therapy (PT) to see Janet. Janet is the bright light among the recent medical professionals she has met.  While looking forward to spending some time with Janet, Hiya was shocked to hear from Janet that she could not provide PT services until Hiya gets the mastectomy. This was not Janet’s decision; she was directed by Dr. Primary to stop services.  Is this blackmail?  Hiya was infuriated.   She will write another letter.

The worst of this message is that the doctor’s are not paying attention to Hiya…only to the prescribed protocol.  They have been informed of the oral bacterial infection Hiya has and that she has 6-8 diseased teeth that need to be extracted. To ignore this critical problem demonstrates either ignorance or malpractice.  No informed, conscientious M.D. would allow any surgery before bacterial mouth infections have been resolved.  It is well known that the mouth is a pathway to other body systems including cardiovascular, immune and pulmonary.  A mouth infection left untreated can easily spread to other areas of the body.

While Hiya pursues the dental work, she greatly appreciates the effects of the physical therapy with Janet.  PT reduces her pain, which reduces her stress, which calms Hiya enough to sleep better.  All these add up to improving her strength, immune system, and reducing inflammation.  It is very unfortunate that Dr. Primary and his boss do not understand this.

On Peri-Gum

February 2nd, 2010

Do you have teeth and gum issues?  There is a most amazing product called Peri-Gum.  It is a mouthwash that has wonderful healing affects. Peri-Gum has undergone clinical testing and been found to be safe and effective.  It’s an amazingly simple product with powerful benefits.

Hiya has been using it regularly of late and the inflammation and swelling in her tissues and gums has decreased. It’s also supposed to reverse or at least reduce tooth decay. While Hiya continues her search for Dr. Right and Dr. Dentist, the Peri-Gum is relieving her of pain and discomfort in her mouth.

On San Diego and HBOT

On San Diego and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Why is it that across the country Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is seeing an increase in use and popularity, but in San Diego, doctors are reticent to prescribe it?

From Wikipedia:

Not long ago, HBOT was controversial and health policy regarding its uses was politically charged. Both sides of the issue of the effectiveness of HBOT for pathological and non-pathological use is available in the form of Cochrane Library reviews.[3]. As of January, 2010, times have changed and HBOT is even being proposed to treat U.S. servicemen and women suffering with PTSD [4] HBOT, both in the hard chambers and the soft chambers, is now seeing widespread use throughout the world for a number of acute and chronic conditions[5].

  • For many other conditions, the therapeutic principle of HBOT lies in its ability to drastically increase partial pressure of oxygen in the tissues of the body. The oxygen partial pressures achievable using HBOT are much higher than those achievable while breathing pure oxygen at normobaric conditions (i.e. at normal atmospheric pressure);

  • A related effect is the increased oxygen transport capacity of the blood. Under atmospheric pressure, oxygen transport is limited by the oxygen binding capacity of hemoglobin in red blood cells and very little oxygen is transported by blood plasma. Because the hemoglobin of the red blood cells is almost saturated with oxygen under atmospheric pressure, this route of transport cannot be exploited any further. Oxygen transport by plasma, however is significantly increased using HBOT as the stimulus.

Did you know that in 1939, Otto Warberg won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery that disease is caused by low oxygen in the tissues?  For more than 70 years, the medical community has been aware of this discovery, yet when treatments that increase the delivery of oxygen to the blood and tissues is accessible, it is still not the treatment of choice.

In San Diego, there are a number of facilities with hyperbaric oxygen chambers. For the most part, you need a doctor’s prescription to access the treatment which is the “rub.”  While HBOT is recognized medically as a treatment for non-healing wounds, certain symptoms of diabetes, and many other ailments, many doctors will not prescribe it.

Do you know of a San Diego doctor willing to prescribe HBOT to a patient with a non-healing wound from cancer?  If you do, please respond to this request.

Hiya January 13, 2010

January 17th, 2010

It was an exhausting day full of mostly disappointments for Hiya.  She went to see Dr. Primary again and learned that he was building a panel, meaning he is a rather new doctor who is just now defining his patient profile.  Although he has an excellent “bed side manner” and is caring enough to even call her at home to check on her, he clearly doesn’t have the interest beyond his current scope of practice to learn anything new.

Hiya’s exhausting search for “Dr. Right” continues.  “I want a doctor to be my partner.  He (because there seem to fewer women at this level) must have an interest in research, in learning what he doesn’t already know,” cites Hiya.  “I need a doctor to take interest in hyperbaric oxygen therapy, phototherapy, and most importantly, nutritional therapy.”

The day also included a visit with Dr. Pulmonologist who offered no help with Hiya’s noisy lungs. “They sometimes have interesting sounds that could be enjoyed as musical notes,” described Hiya.  The doctor had no solution because she thought any action would be futile until Hiya changes her living conditions.

You see, Hiya lives among ashes and soot that have never been cleaned away after the 2007 San Diego firestorms.

On a positive note, Hiya also saw a physical therapist today who turns out to be an excellent communicator – a trait that Hiya regards highly.  “She spoke to me and instructed me like I used to do as a speech therapist.”

Hiya January 12, 2010

January 17th, 2010

With thoughts of writing her paper on Peri-Gum, the excitement and exhilaration kept Hiya from sleep.  She rested about two hours and then began her day getting ready for doctor appointments and more phone calls.  The search for “Dr. Right” continues.

Years ago in 2006, Hiya recalls the audacity of a particular doctor who treated her like a jail inmate and threatened to have her arrested.   Can doctors do that?   Hiya refused to accept the chemo, radiation, surgery protocol for her breast cancer and the doctor was annoyed.  This same doctor is still in the system, now in family medicine. Things haven’t changed much though. Today Hiya received a letter from Dr. Primary stating her refusal to follow recommendations and her dismissal of the specialists to whom she has been referred.  Now on record, she expects Dr. Primary to drop her as a patient….just as well.

“Supposedly, if you don’t do chemo, radiation and surgery, you’re breaking the law,” sighed Hiya.

On Water and Metabolism

November 29th, 2009

(Partial Source: The Metabolic Plan, Stephen Cherniske, M.S.)

“Water exists in a variety of forms. In living things, water is transformed from randomly arranged H2O molecules into a highly organized system that participates in or controls thousands of chemical and biophysical reactions. Water clusters vibrate at specific resonant frequencies, and these frequencies influence cell structure and function throughout life.”

Some additional facts:

  1. In the core of the double helix (DNA) is a column of organized water. Information is “transmitted by that water at lightning speed via resonant frequencies.”….aka VIBRATIONS.

“Research demonstrates that cells possess individual and cooperative resonant patterns that change with a person’s age and metabolic efficiency.”

Resonance is part of anabolic and catabolic metabolism. “Cell communication is enhanced in the anabolic state, and the disruption of cell and tissue function is clearly associated with catabolic decline.”

Okay…enough of this science, but there is so much more to it! Let’s just accept the fact that since water is critical to life and organizes itself within our cells to communicate, that we not only must drink water all day long, but that as we age, we actually need to pay even more attention to it….as well as to the quality of the water we drink.

TYPES OF WATER

Organized or clustered water is the best water for our aging bodies. The water is already in a functional state to communicate within the cells. It’s easier for our aging bodies to assimilate. The best source for this is fresh, raw vegetable and fruit juices. “In addition to being excellent sources of vitamins and minerals, the water component of these juices has already been organized by the fruits and vegetables themselves.”

Tap Water?.hmmmmm. “In a recent survey by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the drinking water supplied to 30 million people in 819 cities contains lead levels above the recommended maximum. “ Lead, in addition to many other toxic contaminants found in tap water is extremely damaging to the body and especially bad for children.

Chlorine? hmmmmm. “A recent study by the U.S. Council on Environmental Quality has established a definite link between chlorination of water and cancer risk.”

TREAT YOUR TAP WATER FOR SAFE DRINKING: Solid carbon filtration, ceramic or particulate filters, ultraviolet irradiation, or my favorite - high alkaline ionized. Before choosing a filtration system, you may want to contact your local water company and get a Water Contaminant Analysis Report to know what contaminants your filtration system must combat.

High alkaline ionized water has multiple benefits, including a superb filtration system for first cleaning the water and then micro-clustering/restructuring the water to provide a source of high alkalinity and high oxygenation (antioxidants) for disease prevention and health maintenance.  For more information, click here.

Bottled Water?..hmmmm…Contact the bottler for a current independent assay – list of bacteria and review of comprehensive group of contaminants.  Most bottled waters have similar make ups as tap water, they’ve just had the chlorine removed so they taste better.  And, the longer the water stays in the plastic bottle or worse yet, heats up in the car, the more toxic and carcinogenic it becomes.  Be careful not to drink water or any beverages that have been stored in the car for even a short length of time if it means the plastic bottle has heated up.

TIP:

Put a note on your refrigerator that reads CHOOSE WATER! Reduce or eliminate dehydrating beverages such as coffee, tea, and caffeinated soft drinks. If you get bored with water, add a few drops of lemon, lime or other fruit juice to jazz it up.

Learning from Within

November 8th, 2009

I’ve spent much of the weekend totally alone, which was a great way to be after a busy week and a past weekend full of out-of-town visitors.  When the TV is off and the radio is off and there’s no one else in the house, but you, what do you do?  what do you think about?  what shows up for you?

For me, I spent lazy morning hours reading and journaling.  These moments of unhurried time allowed for introspection - quite a nice luxury for me.  While enjoying every moment of my solitude, I re-discovered that I like myself; that I’m good company.  I discovered that I am worthy of all my dreams and desires, and that I have plenty for which to be grateful.

As we approach the hectic holidays, I encourage you to check-out on your daily routine and check-in with yourself.  Make some space for you and daydream or meditate — whatever brings you peace and a still mind for a bit.  It’s rejuvenating and often inspirational.  Ahhhhhh….

WATER – the most important regeneration tool in your arsenal

September 20th, 2009

Just like Earth, your body is 70% water. The body’s water however needs to be slightly alkaline so it doesn’t rust out the body and cause you to become ill or die before you’re ready.  In fact, water is vital in just about EVERY function of the body.
Do you drink water?  Of course you do otherwise you wouldn’t be alive and reading this book, but how much do you drink and what is the quality?

Here’s a tip for curbing sickness, sugar cravings, and losing weight. Whenever I feel the slightest dis-ease, whether it’s a cough, headache, digestive issue, or allergic reaction, my first step is to drink a couple of high quality glasses of clean water.  Likewise, if I want to avoid caving into a “sweet tooth” craving, I’ll first drink a big glass of great water and then wait a few minutes because I’ve learned that most cravings we sense are really the body’s cry for more water.  At 70% water, it’s a constant effort to maintain the body’s need for hydration.

Guess what happens when you drink water instead of falling for your junk food cravings?  Yep!  You lose weight.  Not only that, if you maintain a habit of drinking more water than other beverages and you reach a good level of hydration, the fat cells that surround your organs start to fall and melt away.  You see the fat cells are there to protect your organs from the onslaught of nasty, processed, and inorganic compounds we consume in the name of “food.”   Your body’s cells have never heard of things like hydrogenated oil or corn syrup, so they turn these inorganic substances into fat and use it as a protective wall against all future invaders.

What if I told you that there is plenty of international research to substantiate that drinking lots of high quality water could significantly relieve many aches, ills, chronic, and degenerative diseases?  Would you be interested in learning more?

What is good, quality drinking water?  There are 5 characteristics to look for:

  1. Free of pollution, in other words no contaminants and chemicals, which can harm cells and make us sick.

  2. Contains a sufficient amount of electrolyte mineral ions to maintain the electrical balance in our body.  Yes, we are a miraculous energetic (electrical) being.  Water, just like other liquids and foods has an electrical charge and helps conduct electricity throughout the body.

  3. Contains small clusters of molecules, which improve the water’s ability to be absorbed by the cells of the body. Small clusters also improve taste.

  4. Effective at absorbing and transporting other kinds of energy from nature.  Water is critical to the body for transporting nutrients (natural energy) throughout the body.

  5. The molecular structure must be hexagonal to match the structure of DNA.  When we get sick, it is a result of a break in the water molecule structure that surrounds the cells.  All healthy cells are surrounded by hexagonal structured water molecules.

To learn more about the chemical make up of water and its importance to the body, click here for a free copy of the book, Water is Life.

(Low $$) Clean Tap Water – the most accessible health remedy available and the most important weapon in your regeneration toolbox.

(Medium $$) When it is high pH and micro-clustered, water is able to penetrate the cell wall for true hydration, thus providing real regenerative support.  One glass of high pH (alkalized) water is equal to three glasses of ordinary or bottled water based on hydration potential.  Some bottled waters claim to have a slightly alkaline pH ranging from 7.0 – 7.5, however once the water has been in the plastic for more than 24 hours, it has lost whatever level of ionization/antioxidant value it originally had.  For best results, it’s best to drink fresh high alkaline, ionized water directly from your tap at home via a filtration system.

(Medium $$) Alright, so how do you get high alkaline, ionized water at home?  You must have the correct kind of water filter.  Not all water filters provide this level of restructuring so buyers beware.  To learn about the top-of-the-line alkaline, ionizer filters, please click here.

(High $$) One special note about water filters:  Please do your homework.  Not all water filters or bottled water, for that matter, are created equally.  If you really want to have the cleanest, healthiest water system at home that meets all of the above 5 characteristics, you would need to invest in three filtering systems:

1)     Reverse osmosis (RO) to completely clean the water of contaminants.  However RO water has no mineral content at all, leaving it essentially dead and absent of the energy the body needs to function.

2)     Add a re-mineralize system on top of the RO system to replace the essential minerals that the RO removed.

3)     Add an alkaline, ionizer filter that will work with the mineral content to restructure the water into small molecule clusters; raise pH, and infuse oxygen for terrific antioxidant value.

I’ve chosen to install a whole house filtration system to get out the chlorine and most of the contaminants, but it leaves the minerals alone.  Then I use an Athena high alkaline, ionizer, made by EmcoTech and distributed through Ionways.  I love it!  I’ve never felt more energized and have all but stopped taking the previous dietary supplements I use to take on a daily basis for energy.  I simply find that I don’t need them any longer.  Also, my eyes and skin are clear, and my entire body functioning feels fabulous.

I’m now spending about $ .27 per gallon for water out of the Athena filter compared to the bottled water we used to buy at $1.49 a gallon.  We’re saving money, going green with no plastic water bottles, and improving our health – what a concept!

Breathing - A gift to healthy living

September 7th, 2009

As long as you are alive your body will breathe whether you’re conscious of it or not – most of us don’t think about it which is why we have poor breathing habits.

What do you mean I have poor breathing habits?  I breathe in and I breathe out..what can be wrong with that?

We breathe roughly 2500 GALLONS of air daily…it goes from the outside atmosphere to our cells (including all the structures in the lungs and eventually enters the blood).  Along the way there are helpful defenses and antibodies set up to combat any contaminated air you take in, which can neutralize bacteria and viruses to a certain extent.  Are you breathing polluted air; smoker’s air; a sick person’s air, or high mountain fresh air?  Think about it….2500 gallons daily!

There are many books written on the subject of better breathing for better living, but what it all comes down to is the amount of oxygen you’re taking in and whether the oxygen is making it all the way into your cells and more importantly your blood.  Have you every visited an oxygen bar?…they were trendy for awhile, but I haven’t seen any recently.  The concept probably didn’t catch on because there weren’t enough of them like a Starbucks on every corner and most people saw it as just another way of getting a “high” vs. an opportunity to energize all the cells in their body. Let’s face it, we’re a “quick fix” society.  We want instant gratification and convenience.

So, let’s get back to OXYGEN, which is readily available, low cost, convenient and if ”consumed” consciously, provides instant gratification…ahhh!

Here are two simple and quick ways to breathe oxygen/energy into your body, mind and spirit.

(No Cost):  Upon waking or at various times during your day, pause for a conscious moment of deep breathing.  Lie down, sit or stand up straight.  Begin slowly filling you lower abdomen area with air (through your nose) until you feel your chest rise to a point where you cannot possibly take another ounce of air in.  Hold for a count of four.  Then slowly breathe all this air out, through your nose, beginning again with the lower abdomen until you are practically gasping for the next intake of air.  Repeat six to ten times consecutively. Relax and breathe normally and continue your beautiful day until you can take another conscious moment to deeply breathe again.

You know you are doing this correctly if your abdomen extends outward when you are breathing in and pulls back toward your spine when slowly breathing out.  You may feel a bit light headed at first with the flood of invigorating oxygen into the body and brain….just relax and be okay with this new FREE energy.

($ cost):  Yoga.  There are yoga instructors, trainers, and studios everywhere!  There are also yoga DVDs, and books for those of us who think we can learn it on our own.  Personally, this is one of those practices, which is best learned in person with a professional…you don’t want to find yourself in a pretzel position by yourself and not be able to safely unwind!  Start with a basic, beginner yoga class/resource because yoga is all about proper breathing.  Learn it for the oxygen and practice it for good exercise. Enjoy!
